Working very closely with Architect, Bruce Weller, our aim for Royal Ascot Golf Club was to improve the bunker quality for both members and maintenance, while also improving the aesthetics of the bunkers and future proofing for many years to come.
Stephen Nicolson, GM comments:
“When we initially sought to improve the course we asked the membership what areas of the course needed improving. The response was overwhelming, the bunkers were poor and unfair, so these were a top priority.
The bunkers themselves were completely started from scratch, reshaped, drainage added, re-routed accordingly, rubber crumb added as a base to help ensure that the sand wouldn’t get contaminated with the soil as was previously happening in our bunkers. We opted for a a revetted turf edge to ensure a natural finish to the shape of the bunkers, all surrounding areas re-turfed and the bunkers now benefitting from a crisp light grey China Clay sand, which helps to ensure the bunker stand out from afar.
We envisaged undertaking this work in four phases, one a year, but we’re delighted to have finished the work in 2 and ½ years, some 18 months ahead of schedule. As with any project there were bumps along the way, but testament to Conor and his team across the project for the overall successful delivery ahead of time and within budget. We couldn’t be happier. We can now look forward to other course improvements.”
